(Island) Shangri-La unveils Kaema Sutra

Kaema Sutra allows us to present the most modern take on native cuisine whilst also being deep-rooted in the culture of Sri Lanka with its rich history spanning thousands of years, says Timothy Wright, Vice President and General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo.

He said that in conceptualising Kaema Sutra, the inspiration stayed close to Sri lanka’s cultural and historical glory. “With vibrant masks depicting folktales, beautifully carved elephants, and a breezy outdoor space, the restaurant offers a tropical island feel right in the heart of the city”. Located on the fourth floor of the hotel, Kaema Sutra offers both indoor and outdoor spaces with incomparable views over the Indian Ocean”.

Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo together with Celebrity Chef Dharshan Munidasa and internationally acclaimed actress Jacqueline Fernandez presented the city’s new hotspot, serving contemporary native delights on Monday.

Kaema Sutra has been Colombo’s most popular native cuisine restaurant since its inception and now finds its place as one of the six restuarants and bars that make Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo the trendiest lifestyle destination in the city.

The name Kaema Sutra stems from the Sinhala word “Kaema” for food and “Sutra” the Sanskrit word for the study of an art or ideology. This is definitive of Chef Dharshan’s own philosophy where he has painstakingly understood the intricacies of Sri Lankan cuisine with its many regional and colonial influences, the abundant use of the island’s natural spices and ingredients and age-old cooking techniques, which he blends with his own masterful modern style to create authentic Sri Lankan cuisine with novel variations.
